Happy Halloween!

5 Fun Facts about the movie #Halloween!

1.      Halloween’s total budget was $320,000. It grossed $70 million in initial release — making it the most profitable independent film ever made until 1999’s The Blair Witch Project,” (http://flavorwire.com/421737/50-things-you-didnt-know-about-halloween/, staff).

2.      The writers and producers wanted it to be released during the holidays! So, time was tight- they had four weeks, to produce, shoot, and edit the movie.

3.      “That four weeks of prep included writing the script; Carpenter had been hired merely on the basis of the horror premise. He spent three weeks writing the film with producer (and lover) Debra Hill. She wrote most of the dialogue for the female characters, taking great pains to give their characters real authenticity,” ((http://flavorwire.com/421737/50-things-you-didnt-know-about-halloween/, staff).

4.      Curtis was not Carpenter’s first choice for the film (for Laurie). Annie Lockhart turned his him down.

5.      “Soles’ other best-known role in the 1970s was Allan Arkush’s Rock ‘n’ Roll High School, which was also shot by Halloween’s director of photography, Dean Cundey,” (http://flavorwire.com/421737/50-things-you-didnt-know-about-halloween/, staff).

What your favorite Jay-Z Song?

As a follow up to yesterday’s blog topic, Jay-Z’s production of The Great Gatsby movie, I am reviewing some of his more recent music that he has recorded.

Achieving great success as a recording artist as well, Jay-Z has had many hit songs, including, “Empire State of Mind “(Feat. Alicia Keys), and “Run This Town” (Feat. Rihanna and Kanye West), his songs are popular all around. Both of these songs, released in 2009, were classics, and most of his fans have at least 1 favorite song. By proving himself both a talented recording/artist/singer and producer, what do you think will be best known for? I am partial to his production, because of The Great Gatsby, but I also have some Jay-Z favorites.

Do you agree with this blog post? Is Jay-Z a better producer, which is why he stopped recording?

Was Great Gatsby an appropriate soundtrack for the movie?

Jay-Z has proven himself to be a multi-talented singer and producer. As the producer behind The Great Gatsby, the soundtrack gave the movie a modern day feel without compromising a classic story line.  The original inspiration behind this blog, Jay-Z’s Great Gatsby soundtrack, it was one of my personal favorites. However, some movie goers would not agree with this statement. Some people thought the music took away from the story line and almost acted as a distraction to the film.

A certain group of movie goers thought the music should have been more relevant to the times and more jazz and classical. With the recent American Music Award (AMA) nomination for Top Soundtrack, Do you agree with statement and the nomination? Why or why not? Do you think the AMA nomination was given solely because Jay-Z produced the soundtrack and not for the quality?

A Brilliant Performance by Tom Hanks

Captain Phillips, a great movie and unforgettable movie, about an American container ship that gets taken by a crew of Somali pirates. This film was a heartfelt movie which started in a small town in Vermont, so the viewer could see the caring, family man, Tom Hanks, or Captain Phillips, played. It takes you through a intense, stressful adventure where your heart will be in your throat the whole movie. A must see movie of the year.

The music in the movie is classical background music, used for effects. This is not the focal point of the movie or does it take away from the story line or break the viewer concentration.
What did you think of the movie? The music? Would you have chance the type of music maybe added more jazz? Why or why not?

Favorite Song on Katy Perry’s New Album: Prism?

By now, most everyone has had the chance to listen to Katy Perry’s new album, Prism and all 16 songs were enjoyable. Music is very personal, but there is an objective part as well. A great track by track review can be found on Billboard.com, which states facts that music lovers and Katy Perry fans would find interesting. “Birthday - Taking the fairly straightforward lyrical concept of birthday-as-sex and making the absolute most of it, Perry outclasses Rihanna's "Birthday Cake" and shimmies through a blazing brass party,” (http://www.billboard.com/articles/review/5763162/katy-perrys-prism-track-by-track-review, Jason Lipshutz, 10/21/2013).

Katy Perry Birthday:

Personally, my favorite song on the album is International Smile. This Indie Pop song, is a unique addition to the album, both lyrically and instrumentally.

What “Drives” You To the Movies? (Besides a Car)

As a follow up to a statement I made in my blog post yesterday regarding a personal preference- the common theme that will not only generate, but maintain audience interest in films. This statement was added to provoke a thought process so the reader can think and question the reasoning behind WHY they see a movie.

When one takes into consideration the cost of going to the movies, for either a couple or a family of 4 or 5, tickets vary by location at AMC theaters, on average for an adult during prime viewing time is around $12.50 and children slightly less. These high prices force many America who were former weekly or bi-monthly movie-goers, to take into consideration to think twice about spending their hard earned money.

Sometimes people’s time is also equally as limited. With demands to work longer, harder hours at work, more people are very selective how they spend their and have to think about the how long a movie is before they comment. So, my thought/question to my readers is this: what drives a movie-goer to a theater? Is it a unique indie film, which is thought provoking and will have you complicating statements for hours, such as Blue Jasmine? Or would the general population of movie-goers prefer to see a major production, such as Gravity? Which do you view as a bigger value of both you time and money?

An interesting article in USA disuses the increase of movie prices in July of 2013 and how they are at all time high.

Carrie- Much Anticipated Movie is released in Theaters Today or Yesterday at 10pm!

My conclusion of #carriemovie is a must see to start the #Halloween celebrations! As second remake of the movie, was very well done- with a social media- internet twist! A movie which will set the perfect mood for Halloween festivities, when compared to the 1976 original Carrie was a scary remake. #Carrie, the abused, scared 17 year old girl looses self control when she is invited to senior prom, with a few modern day surprises!

Hip Hop Music Awards 2013: Best Performances of the Night?!

When the BET Hip Hop Music Awards Aired in Atlanta, GA, numerous performances were amazing and some unforgettable, which ones were your favorite? I know I am partial to Diddy’s performance, (with a crown on his head!) but there were others that also rocked this night. Performing the famous, ‘Ain’t Worried About Nothin’ French MontanaSnoop Dogg and Rick Ross, fans went wild for their creative collaboration.

2 Chainz performance and fashion were also an unforgettable part of the night! People were twitting all night about his throwback “tall tee” and his performance of “Fork” was also very enjoyable.

A wonderful quote that summaries the awards given out, “In between some awesome musical interludes, we remembered that the show was actually meant to give out awards to talented artistsA$AP RockyDrake, A$AP Ferg, and MC Lyte all won trophies,” (http://hollywoodlife.com/2013/10/15/bet-hip-hop-awards-2013-show-best-moments-pics/, 10/15/2013, Kowalski).

New Partnership Between Universal Music Group/Capitol Records’ Astralwerks & Deadmaus5

Partnerships between record labels and recording artists are not only exciting, but also help support both sides of the spectrum. To summaries the newest partnership between Astralwerks & Deadmaus5, a quote from http://www.astralwerks.com, “In their exciting new partnership, Astralwerks will be the U.S. home to future deadmau5 artist releases and the exclusive distributor and label partner for deadmau5’s imprint mau5trap recordings. This two-tiered agreement, encompassing both deadmau5 as a global label partner with mau5trap and as an Astralwerks roster artist for the U.S., is the first of its kind for Astralwerks.”

Since this was just announced yesterday, there aren’t too many articles written, however, there is one direct quote from Deadmaus5 in Rollingstone.com, “Astralwerks is the perfect place to take both his own music and those on his mau5trap imprint,” "I found a place that knows what to do with my music," he said.

#October #BreastCancerAwareness & Hayley Williams of Paramore

As a huge supporter of #BreastCancerAwareness in #October, I was very pleased to see Hayley Williams of Paramore partnered up with Hard Rock to join the fight against breast cancer. A heartfelt quote from Williams, “Millions are affected by breast cancer and Hard Rock's Pinktober campaign is a great way to help raise global awareness, educate fans and support a cause that affects millions of people," says Williams in a statement."I look forward to joining Hard Rock International for this empowering and high-energy program," (http://www.i101fm.com/paramores-hayley-williams-joins-forces-with-hard-rock-to-raise-awareness-of-breast-cancer/, 2013).

Williams has been named Hard Rock’s Pinktober ambassador for 2013. Appearances and chats will include her Self-Titled Tour starting October 15, in Seattle, Washington.  At the end of the month, Ms. Williams will present a donation to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation at the Hard Rock Café in Philadelphia.

While this campaign is very impressive, what other partnerships/campaigns can the entertainment industry run to support #BreastCancerAwareness #October 2014? Could a record company create a campaign where a certain percentage of their proceeds of the sales for a specific genre or artist every Tuesday for the month of October go the Breast Cancer Research Foundation?

Prisoners: Too violent and upsetting to be released?

"How far would you go to protect your family? Keller Dover is facing every parent's worst nightmare. His six-year-old daughter, Anna, is missing, together with her young friend, Joy, and as minutes turn to hours, panic sets in. The only lead is a dilapidated RV that had earlier been parked on their street. Heading the investigation, Detective Loki arrests its driver, Alex Jones, but a lack of evidence forces his release. As the police pursue multiple leads and pressure mounts, knowing his child's life is at stake the frantic Dover decides he has no choice but to take matters into his own hands. But just how far will this desperate father go to protect his family,” (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1392214/, 2013).

As I was watching the movie, I was shocked by the high level of violence. Having two young children kidnapped is very angry act to being with, and then having various scenes where a peculiar suspect is beaten up is disturbing.  Produced by Warner Brother Pictures, this violent, yet intriguing plot brings up many valid questions. Generally, do movie goers enjoy these types of movies?

Personally, as I was viewing the movie, I noticed the media’s involvement following every part of the story (ex: when Alex Jones was released from jail they were covering the event). I real life, does the media escalate matters? Why or why not?

Panic! at the Disco: To Weird to Die, To Rare to Live

As Fueled by Ramen’s much anticipated new album, is even better than expected! With every song, a catchy tune, this new CD includes hits, such as ‘This is Gospel” and “Miss Jackson (feat. Lolo).”

Too Weird To Live, Too Rare To Die’ is Panic! At the Disco’s fourth album, and lead vocalist Brendon Urie just hopes people will be inspired, excited, and of course, want to dance,” (http://hollywoodlife.com, Lorgeratta, E, 10/8/2013).

With an exclusive interview for Hollywood Life, lead vocalist, Brendon Urie, provides the both the reader and the fan a deeper look into the inspiration and motivation behind the fourth album. Hollywood Life (HL) had some pretty cool questions lined up,  What is the main theme of this?”

Brendon Urie (BU) responded: “It’s a party and dance record — I wanted to celebrate everything we were fortunate enough to be a part of. I wanted people to be excited and dance!”

Another great question regarding their European Tour: “HL: You’ve worked with a lot of great people, and are heading on tour to Europe soon. Tell me about that!”

BU: In November, we’re going with New Politics to Europe and UK, and they’re an amazing band. We’ve worked with so many talented people, able people who make a good record. But the biggest thing that gets overlooked is how well you get along with people — you have to be able to open up. You need to be able to be yourself and open up. Being away from my wife sucks, but the thing that does make it better is having friends on tour. Fall Out Boy and 21 Pilots are both awesome. They’re amazing, and the nicest, most down-to-Earth guys. It’s really cool it works out that way. It’s a genuine friendship. My other favorite people to work with are Butch Walker and Jake Sinclair.”

As a great alternative rock band, originally from Las Vegas, Nevada, they have proved themselves a successful with four excellent albums.

Rush: Two Thumbs Up!

Rush, based on the true story of the revelry of Austrian car racer Niki Lauda (Daniel Bruhl) and British car racer, James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth) and the bitter fight to become the world champion. Everything was perfect in this movie, the actors were casted appropriately, and the 1970’s soundtrack was very authentic to the film and time period.

During Formula 1 race, in Nurburgring, Germany, Lauda’s car crash which trapped in a fire ball of flames of 800 degrees for a whole minute was one of scarcest scenes in a movie this year. His recovery and his hospital stay, while he watched James Hunt racing was his core motivation to race earlier than expected by his physicians. Produced by Andrew Easton, Eric Fellner, Morgan and Howard (Universal Pictures along with Exclusive Media Group, Working Title Films, Imagine Films, and Revolution Films), created an unforgettable movie which will keep viewers thinking about the story plot for hours.

The soundtrack to Rush included originally track titles, produced by none other than the legendary Hans Zimmer.  Including classical titles, such as “1976,” “Car Trouble,” and “Lost but Won,” was an impressive score with award winning potential. Zimmer has out done himself, producing many award winning soundtracks, such as The Lion King and Crimson Tide, continues to wow audiences with his work. Distributed by Water House Music (which is owned by Warner Brothers and acts as in house label to produce their own soundtracks), this soundtrack adds a genuine aspect to the film.
My question for the readers- Is it better to live a safe predictable life and not live each day to the fullest? Why or why not? Do you believe car racing is too risky?

New Movies for Weekend Fun!

With much anticipation, Rush, released in theaters everywhere last Friday, was a complete audience pleaser. A review from NPR has nothing but praises about the film, “A swift-moving, character-rich biopic whose kinetic Grand Prix sequences are constantly being overshadowed by genuinely riveting scenes of ... people talking,” (http://www.moviefone.com/movie/rush/10068169/reviews, 2013).

This week has some very good flicks as well. Gravity was released today, as summarized by IMDb, “A medical engineer and an astronaut work together to survive after an accident leaves them adrift in space,” (http://www.imdb.com/movies-in-theaters/, 2013). A much anticipated movie, I know I am very excited to see it! What are your thoughts? It is exciting or is it too scientific?

Billboard’s 40 under 40- who made the list?

The decision in 2012 to expand our long-running Power Players special feature 30 Under 30 with a revised age criteria has allowed us to highlight the achievements of a greater number of established executives who, nonetheless, are still at a relatively early stage in their careers,” (http://www.billboard.com/biz/articles/4743707/billboards-2013-40-under-40-full-list-revealed. Duffy, T, 7/29/2013).

“The change had another result; a surge in reader nominations when the call when out this spring on billboard.biz. With the added exposure of this project on Twitter, we received well over 400 reader suggestions for execs to recognize,” (http://www.billboard.com/biz/articles/4743707/billboards-2013-40-under-40-full-list-revealed, Duffy, T, 7/29/2013).

For 2013, a few of the people who made it include John Janick (Interscope Records), Aaron Bay-Schuck (Atlantic Records), and Jay Brown (Roc Nation). To see the complete list, visit the article, http://www.billboard.com/biz/articles/4743707/billboards-2013-40-under-40-full-list-revealed.

As you reviewed this article, did you agree with rating these young executives? Do you think this is too intimidating? Why or why not? Personally, I think it is motivational to read about what others have accomplished.

New Artist: Kalyee Rutland- a fresh, new sound of country!

A great part of the entertainment industry, is not only movies, and TV, but also music, especially when it comes to new artists. This new artist, Kaylee Rutland, is an incredible new country artist- who sings with great conviction. As I listen to ‘My Last One,” many similarities to American Idol winner, Carrie Underwood come to mind. The similarities of the two recording artists include vocal range and tone. With a current single, “What We’ll Do For Love,” just released on iTunes, this young country star has the vocal talent and the creative ambition to make it in a very difficult industry.

Learning a little nit about Rutland when reading her bio on her webpage, this young Texas native, just 17 years old, has a voice of angel, appealing to many different age groups.

@SkylarGrey’s Cover of Draft Punk’s Get Lucky

How many of you love @DraftPunk? I know I do, I am a huge fan! How unique is it that a new artist is covering a contemporary hit single? Personally, I was such a fan; I listen to it 3 times on YouTube before purchasing it on iTunes.

As MTV Buzzworthy Blog states, “Grey has been on her grind for a long time now and has worked with everyone from Diddy and Jay Z to T.I., Dr. Dre, and even Marilyn Manson. We last saw her goofing around with Eminem in her "C'mon Let Me Ride" video. Here, although she leaves much of the summer jam's swinging disco intact, Skylar does add in more sweeping electronic touches, upping the already pretty heavy robotic funk quotient considerably,” (http://buzzworthy.mtv.com/2013/09/27/skylar-grey-daft-punk-get-lucky-video/, O’Neil, L, 9/27/2013).

Agreeing with the MTV review, I believe that Grey was one of the most successful, hottest new recording artists of summer 2013. Do you think it is a smart move to have newer recording artists cover contemporary bands/singers? Is this an easier way to have quicker success?
