How do you pick music for a featured film?

Great question, right? This is something that has always piqued my interest, so I wanted to share my research with you!

According to the website, Musiquest.la, this is a very interesting process which involves the producer, as well as the film director who ultimately has the final say.

Using music in movies fall into three categories:

Category #1:  Set background music. This is ideal for a tone in the movie.

Category #2: “…….specific songs used in the film. Sometimes producers decide on using preexisting songs that fit the mood of their film. A good example is the song “Hungry Heart” from Bruce Springsteen that was used in “The Perfect Storm” or the song “American Woman” by The Guess Who in the academy award winning ‘American Beauty,’” (http://musiquest.la/how-is-music-chosen-for-feature-films/, June 29, 2013).

Category #3: Incorporating a song which was recorded and produced specially for that movie.

All of these three very different categories involves a separate process and has individual sets of their own.

Successful soundtracks add public interest to a film. Who doesn’t remember such monster soundtracks as “Saturday Night Fever” or “The Big Chill?” Film soundtracks have been among the best selling albums of all time,” (
http://musiquest.la/how-is-music-chosen-for-feature-films/, June 29, 2013).

What are your thoughts on this? Do you think that music adds a public interest to a film or does the public interest lie in the story line of the film?

Personally, I believe that it is both. It is critical that your story line appeals to your audience, but also includes interesting music.

J.D. Salinger: An Amazing Documentary or was it?

“J.D. Salinger,” an unforgettable documentary, is about the life of the mysterious author of Catcher in the Rye.  In this documentary, Salinger, has many secrets of his life reveled. The audience was able to see and finally understand the recluse, “Jerry David Salinger.” A brilliant writer, yet very difficult was married 3 times and had many relationship in between, usually with very young women, lived a unique life.  From being raised a privileged child in a Manhattan apartment, to his years of service on WWII, his documentary takes a closer look at an interesting life.

The soundtrack for “J.D. Salinger,” was a fresh and creative compilation of the composer and music producer, Mr. Lorne Balfe. Licensed to Decca Records, a label owed operated by Universal Music Group, it involved a variety of classical songs, such as, “Salinger,” “The Bunker,” and “Perfect Moments.” Not only a beautiful contemporary classical arrangement, however, when reviewing the tracks, Balfe was the only composer to be featured in the soundtrack. Through very accomplished this Grammy award winning, composer only featured his own work, instead of including some traditional works, such as Bach, Beethoven, or Handel. As the audience what did you think of this? Was it effective?

However, when thinking about the documentary, I have to stop and wonder, why was this produced for a PR stunt in order to increase publicity for his two novels to be released in 2015 and 2020? Or could it have been to appeal to a very small segment of movie goers? I believe it was done for a PR stunt and allow America to see the real J.D. Salinger- a complicated man.

@Drake New Album- Love it?

@Drake’s new album, ‘Nothing Was The Same,” has been getting a lot of attention the past 24 hours. In a quote from Billboard, they summaries his latest album as such, “The progression is palpable. His third studio album, "Nothing Was the Same," features a self-aware artist, sure of himself and of the talent of his right-hand man, producer Noah "40" Shebib. 40, who co-produced the majority of the album, has mastered his dark, lush sound, easing the fluidity of the album while mixing inspiration like Houston rap and 90s R&B. Each song is a lucid story of its own, in which Drake reveals more of himself, from who he was once to who he's becoming. The storytelling is filled with flashbacks, acceptance of wrongdoing and unshakeable pride,” (http://www.billboard.com/articles/review/5720656/drake-nothing-was-the-same-track-by-track-review, Ramirez, E 9/25/2013).

As a track my track review the article, describes the album in very fine detail. Take song #6, which was described as “‘Worst Behaviour’ - Drake capitalizes on the bounce built from "Own It" to segue into this boastful, DJ Dahi-produced track. "Always hated the boy but now the boy is the man, mother fucker I'd grown up," Drake raps, with a rougher tone than usual, (http://www.billboard.com/articles/review/5720656/drake-nothing-was-the-same-track-by-track-review, Ramirez, E 9/25/2013).

If you click on the article, link,  http://www.billboard.com/articles/review/5720656/drake-nothing-was-the-same-track-by-track-review, you can preview ‘Started From The Bottom,” what are your impressions of the song and the review as a whole?

iTunes Festival: Music to My Ears!

For 30 days in the month of September, iTunes is hosting a free festival live in London, with acts such as Kings of Leon, Avicii, Paramore, and Ellie Goulding performing, people have tweeting, blogging and reviewing the show. Using hastage #iTunesFestival and following @iTunesFestival, people have been posting their thoughts regarding the month long event.

A review from September 12, “The band put everything into their performance, with frontman Jim Adkins constantly interacting with the crowd, telling gig-goers to high-five each other as they launched into their back catalogue.Their energy was infectious, and had the audience uncharacteristically dropping their phones in favour of fist pumps, hand-claps and devil horns,” (http://www.4music.com/news/reviews/11605/Kings-Of-Leon-Jimmy-Eat-World-rock-iTunes-Festival-2013, 9/12/2013, News: Kings Of Leon & Jimmy Eat World rock iTunes Festival 2013, Mensah, J).

“Kings of Leon took to the stage to deafening cheers and launched into recent single Supersoaker before playing their 2004 hit Bucket. This set the tone for the rest of the evening, which was to display the best of their impressive catalogue,” (http://www.4music.com/news/reviews/11605/Kings-Of-Leon-Jimmy-Eat-World-rock-iTunes-Festival-2013, 9/12/2013, News: Kings Of Leon & Jimmy Eat World rock iTunes Festival 2013, Mensah, J).

With the price of concert tickets extremely costly for today’s economy, hosting a month long free festival is a smart way to get fans there and not lose the publics’ interest. Overall, #iTunesFestival has been an extremely successful event, with many major acts performing.

If given the chance, would you fly to London to see and experience @iTunesFestival?  Please comment, I look forward to reading your thoughts!

Integration of Fashion, Music & Magazine Publishing

Integrating industries and working together when planning large scale event has always been a wise idea. However, with the current economy, it is very important that related industries help each other, not only with actual funding of event, but also with aiding in publicity efforts.

Take three industries, Fashion, Music, and Magazine Publishing, very unique to the core, are now working together to host large scale events. Not only are these events more interesting, but also allowing individuals from all walks of life (working in the industry) to get an invite. Take music festivals and awards shows. Many of these events require that companies co-host certain aspects of them, therefore making them that much more amazing!

Overall, I am a huge advocate of integrating different industries when hosting an event, however, what your thoughts and follow up questions?  Do you think it adds a different/unique spin or makes things overly complicated?

New Release Tuesday: The Hot New Tunes for the Week

Always a great day to look forward to, with new tunes released weekly, today Group Love and Jack Johnson, Group Love, the indie band, who started in 2009, has a unique and clever single “Way to Go.” Out today is there full length album “Spreading Rumors,” with more indie music; and when I previewed the album on iTunes, there is at least 1 song all music fans can sing a long too!

Christian Zucconi was nobody's idea of a Hollywood slickster when he ambled onstage one night last month at Club Nokia. Gawky, wild-haired and wrapped in what appeared to be a secondhand bathrobe, the frontman of L.A.'s Grouplove was there to perform with his band as part of a benefit for the Grammy Foundation,” (http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/music/posts/la-et-ms-grouplove-20130917,0,6760728.story, Wood, M, 9/17/2017).

Please click the link below to view the video.

Jack Johnson, with his two hit singles “I got you” and “Washing Dishes,” off his new album, “From Here to Now to You,” out today. With multiple releases, Johnson, a folk singer, has a very interesting sound with his new hit singles.

Please click on the link to listen to “I Got You.”

Both music reviews are very exciting for this week! More artists with new release today include, Five for Fighting, Booksmarks Bill Currington, We Are Tonight, and Avicii- True (September 13, 2013).

Which are you must excited about?

I know I am most excited about Avicii True and Group Love.

Lorde- A Very Impressive New Artist

“Pausing a photo shoot in Auckland, New Zealand, for an interview, the 16-year-old singer better-known as Lorde delivers this without a hint of standoffishness. She's less distraught about the promotional trappings of a flourishing music career than she is clear about her desire to retain some mystique,” (http://www.billboard.com/articles/news/5687161/lorde-the-billboard-cover-story, Lipshutz, J, 9/6/2013).

Not only a refreshing sound, but also a very inspirational story, Lorde a 16 year old from New Zealand, is on the cover of Billboard Magazine. Signed at the age of 13, she has touched both the ears and hearts of people around the world with her exceptional voice. “Royals’” the first US single is not only a catchy tune that a fan can’t stop listening to, but a brilliant music video. Please feel free to click on the link below to read the Billboard.com article and view and music video.

Overall the song & recording artist is a thumbs up! I can’t wait to see what else Lorde will record in the future- what an artist to watch!

According one of the most trust worthy music magazines, Billboard, Fall 2013’s review for the season includes, “Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus, Panic! In a quote from the staff who composed the article, “From Avicii to Lady Gaga, Eminem to Pearl Jam, Enrique Iglesias to Miley Cyrus and Keith Urban to Cher, Billboard spotlights the hot hip-hop, pop, rock, R&B, latin, and country releases that will define the season. Which albums will reign supreme in autumn 2013,” (http://www.billboard.com/articles/5679948/fall-music-preview-2013-the-52-hottest-albums, Billboard.com, 9/3/2013)?

VMA Recap- What are your thoughts on Miley Cyrus’s Performance?

The VMAs as a whole, were an amazing event, they had great moments and some questionable moments.

Miley Cyrus did her best to shock the audience of the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday night, and according to most, she succeeded. Whether she was stripping to her underwear, grinding on a foam finger or twerking with giant teddy bears, Cyrus left jaws on the floor (though not in a good way.)”

“Just to make things more fun, Sunday was also Miley's dad's 52nd birthday. Happy birthday, Billy Ray!”

“Media reaction to Cyrus' bump-and-grind veered between disgust and sadness,” (http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/tv/showtracker/la-et-st-miley-cyrus-vma-performance-media-reacts-in-shock-20130826,0,7040383.story, Los Angeles Times, Patrick Kevin Day, 8/26).

Do you think this LA Times review is too harsh? Do you agree with it? Personally, I think that the entire show and night was very memorable, but the verdict is still out on Miley’s performance.
